In the communities of Kambia District, Sierra Leone, ABC-Development is leading an initiative that is reshaping the way women participate in governance and social accountability. Through its Annual Accountability Policy Dialogue, the organization is creating spaces where women’s voices are not only heard but actively included in decisions that affect their communities. This project brings together councillors, government officials, community leaders, and young women—including those living with disabilities—to discuss real challenges and explore practical solutions for inclusive governance.
Participants from four wards shared diverse experiences, highlighting barriers in education, healthcare, agriculture, and leadership. Young women described the difficulties they face in accessing education and opportunities for civic engagement, while mothers spoke about challenges in obtaining healthcare for themselves and their children. Farmers detailed the struggles of accessing resources and support, and community members highlighted how gender biases limit women’s participation in local decision-making. These stories created a vivid picture of the barriers women and marginalized groups face daily and underscored the importance of collaborative solutions.
Funded by the European Union through Trocaire, ABC-Development’s project focuses on action. The dialogue explored practical steps to strengthen women’s leadership, including advocating for at least 30% representation in decision-making bodies, integrating gender into public budgets, and improving access to essential services. By building on issues identified in prior town hall meetings, the dialogue moved beyond discussion to concrete strategies that can improve social inclusion, equity, and governance across the district.
The initiative also fostered trust and collaboration between authorities and citizens. Councillors and government officials listened to the lived experiences of community members, while young women gained confidence in speaking up and contributing ideas. These interactions demonstrated the power of dialogue in building mutual understanding and empowering participants to take active roles in shaping their communities.
The impact of ABC-Development’s efforts extends beyond the dialogue. Women are encouraged to assume leadership positions, communities feel empowered to hold authorities accountable, and government ministries gain insights into the real needs of citizens. This ensures that policies and programs are more inclusive and responsive to the people they serve.
By implementing this project, ABC-Development is proving that dialogue, empowerment, and collaboration are essential for social change. The Annual Accountability Policy Dialogue is more than a meeting—it is a catalyst for lasting transformation, fostering inclusive governance, and strengthening women’s influence in decision-making networks.
Through initiatives like this, Kambia District is moving toward a future where women’s voices are valued, communities are more unified, and governance reflects the needs of all citizens. ABC-Development’s work demonstrates that when women are included and empowered, equitable development and social progress become achievable goals.
